Tom Howard, Head of Design at Nothing, notes that many contemporary smartphones adhere to a standard layout for internal components, which stifles creativity and innovation. For the design of the Nothing Phone (1), Howard drew inspiration from Massimo Vignelli’s New York subway map, admiring how the designer transformed a complex system into a work of art. Nothing experimented with various layouts to incorporate the wireless charging coil, deliberately moving away from traditional Android phone designs. In addition to the smartphone, Nothing also launched the Nothing Ear (1) wireless earbuds, featuring a transparent design that allows users to see the internal components.

Future transparent tech gadgets that will hit market

In March 2024, Lenovo unveiled the experimental ThinkBook laptop, showcasing a borderless screen, a transparent keyboard area, and a unique floating footpad design. The ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept features a 17.3-inch borderless display that offers up to 55 percent transparency when the pixels are set to black. However, this transparency diminishes as the pixels illuminate. According to The Verge, the concept laptop boasts a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and a 720p resolution. The laptop boasts a flat touch keyboard, not a physical keyboard but a projection. As you approach the Thinkbook with a pen, the keyboard gradually fades away, revealing a blank canvas for drawing or sketching.  

Microsoft has hopped on the transparent tech gadgets trend with its Xbox Elite 2 controller‘s ‘Cipher Series,’ allowing users to see the inner mechanics of the device. The available colour options include Ghost Cipher (white), Velocity Cipher (green), Astral Cipher (purple), Surf Cipher (blue), Candy Cipher (pink), and Pulse Cipher (red). Additionally, users can choose from Energy Chroma and Sunset Chroma options for the paddles and D-pad. Furthermore, Microsoft is introducing the new ‘Ghost Cipher’ edition, a sleek, standalone version that enhances transparency, offering a more refined and see-through design than its Elite counterparts.
