Remember dial-up internet, cyber cafes, and bulky laptops? Well, the world has moved on from early adoption culture and into a new frontier: Apple AI. For years, tech titans like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have been locked in a heated race, pushing the boundaries of AI’s capabilities, from personalized recommendation engines to developing self-driving cars. 

Apple, ever the enigmatic player, seemed content to observe from the sidelines, quietly integrating AI capabilities into its devices via Siri, Photos, and FaceID. But whispers are turning into roars, and Apple is finally hitting the gas pedal in the AI race. 

Nearly a decade after AlexNet pulled the trigger on the modern AI race, analysts wonder if Apple is a latecomer desperately trying to catch up or a cunning strategist poised to rewrite the rules. 

Why hasn’t Apple AI entered the ring? 

Apple’s involvement with AI has been nuanced. Siri, introduced in 2010 as a revolutionary virtual assistant, hasn’t kept pace with rivals like Google Assistant and Alexa. While her natural language processing, accessibility, and task automation tout success, critiques of her accuracy and functionality often overshadow even her major updates. Others believe they were playing the long game, strategically waiting for the perfect moment to unleash their AI prowess with something truly groundbreaking. This wait-and-see approach wasn’t without its benefits. Apple’s tightly controlled ecosystem allows for seamless integration of hardware, software, and services, which could become a crucial differentiator in the AI race where data silos and compatibility often hinder progress. 

Signs of ambition: Apple’s growing AI arsenal 

Recently, something has changed, and Apple’s AI game is heating up. Here are some key markers of their growing ambition: 

  • AI R&D on Steroids: Apple talent scouts are actively recruiting AI experts like Russ Salakhutdinov from Carnegie Mellon University and Yann LeCun from Meta. Research labs are emerging globally, with a significant presence in Canada, Israel, and China. Collaborations with leading universities like MIT and Stanford further showcase Apple’s serious commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI research. 
  • On-Device AI: Strike down cloud supremacy. Apple’s new wave is developing custom AI chips (like the Neural Engine found in iPhones), allowing devices to run AI tasks independently, with or without internet connectivity. This could be a game-changer for both privacy and performance. 
  • Siri’s Evolution Continues: Don’t count Siri out yet. While she may not be the reigning champion, Apple isn’t giving up. Continuous improvements are underway, focusing on increased natural language processing and deeper integration with Apple services like Apple Music and Maps. Rumoured features like proactive suggestions and improved context awareness aim to make her smarter and more intuitive. 
  • AI-Powered Product Blitz: Buckle up for an innovation wave! Whispers hint at an AR headset, a self-driving car, and even an Apple Watch with blood sugar monitoring—all powered by AI. While just rumours, they showcase Apple’s ambition to integrate AI across its product portfolio. 
  • Beyond the Ecosystem: Embracing the Wider Landscape While Apple’s marriage to its private ecosystem approach has its advantages, they’re dipping toes in the broader AI landscape. Collaborations with companies like Intel and Nvidia suggest an openness to partnerships that could benefit their AI development; participation in open-source AI projects like TensorFlow showcases their willingness to contribute to the wider AI community. 

Challenges of Apple AI 

Despite their growing arsenal and strategic approach, Apple faces several challenges in the AI race. The specter of data privacy concerns looms large, especially with Apple’s driving demand for on-device AI. As AI becomes closer to home, ethical considerations around bias, fairness, and accountability become even more important. Apple will need to demonstrate responsible development and deployment of AI to avoid ethical pitfalls, since established players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have a significant head start and vast resources. 

Next, attracting and retaining top AI and tech talent is a bloodbath. Apple’s competing with the highest salaries, exciting new startups, and stimulating research opportunities. However, Apple also has significant opportunities to leverage its strengths for recruitment: a strong brand reputation, fiscal control, and a loyal customer base. 

Finally, Apple’s closed ecosystem conflicts with the openness required for collaborative and diverse AI research. This may limit the cross-pollination of ideas and data sharing common in more open ecosystems. 


While Apple may not be the first AI mover, its strategic approach, focus on user privacy, and commitment to on-device AI offer a compelling alternative to existing solutions. Whether they become a game-changer or another player on the field remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: Apple’s presence in the AI arena is sure to shake things up and contribute to the ongoing evolution of this transformative technology.
